Calling All Detectives is said to be the earliest form of mystery-based quiz shows. Mutual Radio (Weekly): 4/7/1945 – 8/25/1945 Syndication: 1947? – 1950? Vincent Pelletier as "Robin" (Network Run) Paul Barnes as "Dectective Jerry Browning" (Syndicated Run) In the network version, listeners were selected from cards that they sent to the show. When the mystery reached its climax, local announcers would call their listeners, and listeners who solved the mystery received prizes.

Family Theater was an dramatic anthology radio show which aired on the Mutual Broadcasting System in the United States from February 13, 1947 to September 11, 1957. The show was produced by Family Theater Productions, a film and radio studio extension of the Family Rosary Crusade founded by the Holy Cross Priest, Father Patrick Peyton, CSC, as a way to promote family prayer. The motto of the these Holy Cross Family Ministries is, "The family that prays together, stays together." The program had no commercial sponsor, yet Father Peyton, CSC arranged for many of Hollywood's stars in film and radio at the time to appear. In its ten-year run, well-known actors and actresses, including James Stewart, Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Raymond Burr, Jane Wyatt, Charlton Heston, Bing Crosby, Jack Benny, Gene Kelly, William Shatner and Chuck Connors, appeared as announcers, narrators or stars. A total of 540 episodes were produced. The program featured not only religious stories but half-hour adaptations of literary works such as A Tale of Two Cities, Moby-Dick and Don Quixote

Ted Mallie, of The Shadow, was the announcer for the series, and Elliot Drake was the director.
Don Douglas played John Steele. John Larkin, Jack Edwards, Bryna Raeburn and other radio personalities were also featured in the series as supporting actors. Music for the series added tones of mystery and adventure and was produced by Sylvan Levin and later, Doc Whipple.
In addition to the voice cast, the productions featured and background sounds and supporting cast typical of radio theatre productions of this era.
Each story would end with the following quote:

Lux Radio Theatre, sometimes spelled Lux Radio Theater, a long-run classic radio anthology series, was broadcast on the NBC Blue Network (1934–35) (owned by the National Broadcasting Company, later predecessor of American Broadcasting Company [ABC] in 1943 /1945); CBS Radio network (Columbia Broadcasting System) (1935-54), and NBC Radio (1954–55). Initially, the series adapted Broadway plays during its first two seasons before it began adapting films.
